Mountains have a massive effect on the world: they cover 24 per cent of the Earth’s surface, carry 12 per cent of the global population, provide essential goods such as food and timber, and perform vital services such as minimising the risk of floods. A pioneering online postgraduate degree course from the UHI Millennium Institute is increasing international expertise in sustainable mountain development. Students from anywhere in Europe can sign up for the course, which focuses on real-life, practical solutions. As climate change takes hold, looking after our mountains has never been more important.
